Fiveman and Jetman Revisited

I briefly talked about these two shows in the first part of the Nostalgia Trilogy, and after a few months or so, I slowly remember some fond memories regarding these two Super Sentai shows, and so here it is, I am going back to the good ol’ 90’s in which I am pissed with Jetman’s pop-up wings.

First up, Fiveman; this is to be exact, my first Super Sentai show that I watched. The very first memories about this show is the opening sequence in which each of the five men will pop out, the theme song will play and see Red practice kendo… while snowing (!) while the rest are just doing their stuff, so yeah.

Take note, back then I thought Sentai is a rip-off of the Power Rangers and I was proven myself wrong after seeing the ending credits of Power Rangers Wild Force with Gaoranger credited. I am not sure what fascinated me to watch Fiveman. Was it because of the unique visors? Or the logos in their heads? Or was it because of Arthur turning into the team cannon? Either way, I was hooked with Fiveman and since I have no idea that they are a sibling team, I often pair Red with Pink and Yellow and Black or Blue, just for the heck of it.

Are the characters memorable to me back then? Well, asides from Red doing kendo or Blue swimming and Yellow practicing kung fu, those characters never left quite a mark on me back then. Because it felt like this team is like the MMPR team and I always liked the MMPR team compared to the Fivemen. That is why, I prefer the other Sentai show that I watched when I was a kid, Jettoman, I mean, JETMAN!

Like I said in the Trilogy, back when I was a kid, I was pissed that Yellow is a guy, Blue is a chick (Since I have this strong notion that all Blue Rangers must be dudes and all Yellow Rangers are chicks) and they have wings pop-up out from their suits. But it later grew on me because of the characters. Ryu’s backstory is fascinating even with his stoic leader personality, Gai like my notion with all guys in black back then is quite a bad boy, Raita is the only one with, well, weight problems making me root for the guy, Ako was the tomboyish chick and Kaori is the princess.

Since I don’t care much about the episode numbers, as far as I can recall, the first episode of Jetman that I watched is about either the Ramen Jigen, (That caused me back then to check if the cup noodle that I am holding is hauted or something...) the Ruby monster thing or the Juice episode. But from all the episodes that Jetman had, the episode/s that made quite a mark on me are the episodes that talks about Ryu and his relationship with his girlfriend, Rie/Maria. The fact that she turns out to be alive and is one of the bad guys makes this love story complicated, and the fact that Kaori loves Ryu and that Gai cares about Kaori complicates stuff! I love this kind of complication back when I was a kid and until now!

Asides from the Ryu’s extremely complicated love story episodes, Raita’s focus episode left quite a mark on me and the fact that the girl he likes knew that he was Yellow Owl was the best part of it! This is when I conclude, even if you have weight issues, as long as you are awesome, you can impress the chicks! Well, that was my crackpot thinking of the episode back then but now, I think of that episode as that even if you have your hindrances, you can do anything as long as you tried hard, if not, try harder.

Asides from the Jetman, the bad guys aka Vyram left quite a mark on me. Asides from Maria (which I had a secretly has a crush on because I thought that if I had a crush on a bad guy, it will make me a bad guy), Radiguet’s appearance left quite an impact on me than the head from Fiveman. Seriously, it really freaked me out back then! That robot guy who likes to smoke is one of my favorite villains asides that even with his exterior, he still has a soft side by playing the piano. And one thing that is memorable with the bad guys is that I can’t figure out whether Tran is a boy or a girl!

The mecha of the series is quite memorable to me asides that they had an automatic mecha and that none of the mecha are cars or something but birds people! Birds! It is pretty rare in one series that all vehicles are flying. Oh, the folding head sequence of Red Hawk’s mecha quite left a mark on me that caused me to imagine, can real airplanes do that?

The ending theme video of the series is memorable to me asides from the opening theme. I mean, who wouldn’t the forget the colored eggs forming one single egg and cracked with Hironobu Kageyama’s vocals started playing on the background! Also, the paper cutout images of the Jetmen in their civilian form (especially Ryu looking like he was that Galileo’s sketch, that caused me nightmares back then) and Gai playing the sax was memorable.

Jetman is indeed my childhood Sentai show since I had quite a lot of fond memories with this show. Speaking of memories, I am not sure if I had watched Turboranger or Maskman since after seeing the opening sequence in which a car is being folded into half suddenly caused my head to remember a Sentai with that gimmick. But since I never heard of Maskman’s Filipino OP, I guess I had watched Turboranger back when I was a kid… or had a glimpse of it.

Special thanks to Super Sentai Images for most of the well, images!

Nostalgia Extended: Western Literature Meets Anime

As we all know, Japan has adapted the Bible into an anime via The Flying House and Superbook. But aside from that Asian Literature (If I remember correctly, there are anime films based on old Japanese folklore), they have adapted works coming from Western Literature. I was lucky that I was able to watch those titles back in my childhood but since I am a little dumb back then, I thought these titles are Chinese cartoons! You see, it is in the mindset of most Filipino kids back then that if they don’t understand the language, it is Chinese!

I was able to watch anime versions of Peter Pan, which I got bored while watching it, Cinderella, in which the Japanese butchered the series by adding talking animals, lengthening the simple story into a complex title in which the prince and Cinderella already met, making it into a “love knows no boundaries” type of story. Lastly, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, the only anime adaptation based on a fairy tale that I enjoyed watching asides since the fairy tales are told in a single episode.

Aside from Fairy Tales, they adapted novels, which in my opinion are one of the best anime titles that I have watched. While writing this thing, I was listening to the audio of the reruns of Mary and the Secret Garden, which is based on the novel, called, Secret Garden. Ah, Camilia, I still can’t figure out why people in Mary’s town hate you. If only I was able to finish the series. If only.

Aside from the Secret Garden, a Little Princess was turned into an anime which is called here as, Sarah, A Little Princess (In Filipino, Sarah, Ang Munting Prinsesa). If you are familiar with the film or the novel, you know that it is about a girl named Sarah, after enjoying a life of comfort, she ends up being a slave to a school after her father died in India because she can’t pay her bills. For starters, I was bored with the title but not to my surprise, the series was a hit to Filipinos that it was turned into a film that starred the best actors of the 90’s to create this film! It was later turned in the late 2000 era into a live-action TV show with forgettable cast and forgettable retelling because the series is filled with magic!

Another title that was given a movie treatment, is Cedie, The Little Prince (In Filipino, Cedie, Ang Munting Prinsipe), which is based on Little Lord Faulderoy. The story is about Cedie who is living an ordinary life in New York when he learned that he is of royal blood and the grandchild of a Duke back in England! He later moves to England and learns the ways of royalty while she is separated with her mom. The only thing that binds them together even if they are so close yet so far (Even if Cedie came to England with her mom, the Duke separates them and forbids them to meet), is music.

This anime is one of my all time favorite anime titles of all time due to its story and there is change within the characters. The Duke, from a cold old man, he slowly melts into Cedie’s lovable grandfather. Even if an impostor grandchild her mother appeared, the Duke still prefers Cedie and at the very end even with those imposters around. Even though it was turned into a movie, it was never turned into a live-action TV show! Seeing how crappy Sarah is and wasted talent on their older cast, it is no surprise that they never adapted Cedie!

Another thing that I loved about this series is the song, Annie Laurie. To those who don’t know the song, here it is on top of you.

Another novel which is turned into an anime is Daddy Long Legs (Which I got the glimpse of the novel), which is named here as, Julie. The story is a coming out of age story of Julie Abbot after she leaves the orphanage thanks to her benefactor, which she calls Daddy Long Legs. As the series progressed, she enjoys her high school life, fell in love and being chased by two guys and at the end got married to… I will not spoil it to you because it is one of the best parts of the series!

Along with Cedie, I was able to finish Julie. The series is one of the early examples of how Japan was able to handle a slice of life series. Julie was something fresh for me back then, and until now, it is still as fresh as ever. Seriously, who could have ever think of something as Daddy Long Legs? Anyways, as the series progressed, it focused more on Julies love story with some stranger they meet and Julia’s (her blonde friend) older brother. At the end, Julie was able to decide whom the person she loves more and later learned the biggest question that bothers viewers. Who is Daddy Long Legs?

There is also an Alice in Wonderland cartoon in which I am not sure if it is an anime or not due to the English opening theme. One thing I remembered at that show is that Alice is not alone in her journey in Wonderland… and the caterpillar who likes to smoke back in the Disney version is here acts like an adviser to Alice. And yes, he is still smoking crack, I mean he still smokes the same thing!

Another title based on Western Literature that I watched is the gender bend version of the classic World Masterpiece Theatre anime title which is based on an old French tale called, Remi. In the original French tale and the original World Masterpiece Theatre anime, Remi is a male. While in this version which is still part of the World Masterpiece Theatre, Remi is a girl and they added more depth into her character that she is in search for her mother as she wonders around the streets of France.

The series itself was also memorable due to its soundtrack, the fact that Remy is part of a marching band along with a dog and a monkey (Jalicur!). It shows us the darker side of France that even with all its beauty, the city itself has some ugly side, with street children running around stealing if they can’t beg people to give them alms and is staying with an evil man.

There are also other titles in which I am not sure if it is based on Western Literature such as Romeo’s Small Dreams (In Filipino, Mga Mumunting Pangarap ni Romeo) and Julio and Julia, Twins of Fate (In Filipino, Julio at Julia, Kambal ng Tadhana). If someone can tell me were it is based, please tell me. Also, these are not only the anime titles which is based on Western Literature. Asides from the entire World Masterpiece Theatre series (In which the Dog of Flanders is part and is one of the memorable anime titles Japan loved), there is a Jungle Book anime (Get up!), and many titles which has heavy Western literature influence on it (That includes an anime with a little detective girl in England!). And you thought that the Marvel Anime series is the first anime series based on something Western!

Nostalgia Extended: Digimon Adventure

Since Nostalgia Trilogy was over almost a year ago, and since it is a trilogy, I decided to extend it with this new series! Not sure about how long will this series be, but if I find a show from back then worth talking about, I will talk about it. For its first serve, we will go to the Digital World with Digimon Adventure!

I first watched Digimon Adventure back in the early 2000, same case with Pokemon in which the TV station that aired it here in the Philippines likes to say that Pokemon will end and stop it for a couple of months and will say that Ash and Pikachu now has new adventures! Probably seeing the success of Pokemon, its rival station decided to air a show quite similar to Pokemon that is Digimon!

Since they want to directly rival Pokemon, as I mentioned in Nostalgia Trilogy, for me to watch both shows, what I did is to press the “Return” button once the other show is on commercial break! Fun, yes. In terms of understanding the plot, I still understand it. After reading an entry about Guinness World of Records, about Pokemon causing seizures in Japan, I decided to stop watching Pokemon and focus only on Digimon… thank God, my decision in focusing on Digimon is right! Pokemon will never end!

Digimon Adventure is about seven kids who just have their summer camp but on that day, their lives will change forever. They were transported into a different world in which they meet monsters known as Digimon, the seven kids meet and we they are: Taichi (The guy will goggles), Koshiro (The geek), Yamato (The bishie), Sora (Girl 1, loves birds), Mimi (Girl 2, loves malling and has a Digimon partner who is either a girl or a boy... that punches!), Takeru (The Kid) and Joe (That guy with glasses). Takeru and Yamato are siblings and Yamato and Taichi are having problems who will lead these kids. They are later added with Taichi's sister, Hikari (Kid 2).

For starters, I got into Digimon not because of the kids, but because of the monsters! Agumon and Gabumon became my instant favorite Digimons and the fact that they return back to normal once they evolve (or what my dub calls it, changes) into a stronger species, making them much more compact compared to Pokemon! Therefore, I officially was hooked with the show.

As the show progressed, one of the reasons why I got into the show is the fact that the monsters themselves grow up as characters along with their assigned partners. We saw how Taichi and Yamato fight because of their specific responsibility; saw how Takeru grew when we saw Patamon who just evolved into Angemon who just died protecting him, and was resurrected as a DigiEgg.

For a kid’s show, those themes are something deep. Something that is rare for an anime aimed for kids. Aside from that, the first series has one of the best character developments that I saw in anime. I mean, if I will compare Satoshi (Ash) with Taichi, Satoshi barely has character development while Taichi has enough character development that lasted for a 54-episode series.

One of the best parts in the original series is when they “let go” of their specific partner Digimon, its emotional but it was partly ruined here in the Philippines when those executive bigwigs decided to air Zero Two before ending Adventure! I was like, what the heck?! What happened to Taichi and co. as they fight the boss to save Earth! But hey, seeing them how they looked like in Zero Two was fun anyway. Plus, seeing that Daisuke wears goggles, I am fine with it and since then, my mind is set that all leaders of the group is required to wear goggles… till Masaru came and ruined the tradition.

If there is an anime that I want to see on TV again, that would be Digimon Adventure. Seeing that a certain TV station likes to rerun Digimon, hope that someday, they would return Digimon Adventure on TV!
